Why Am I Stuck?

A Series

How we live day to day is the result of our choices—some intentional, others automatic. Those choices are shaped by experiences, influences, and sometimes survival. At one point, they served a purpose. But as life evolves, what once worked may no longer serve us. That’s when we’re faced with a decision: remain the same or embrace change.

Something I’m sure you’ve heard before is that change is inevitable. In nature things naturally grow, develop, and die, which is to say, they change. We like to see it happen in nature - baby animals are born and grow up, the seed turns into a plant that produces vegetables, kids become teenagers who become adults. But growth and development only comes with change. What’s interesting is to see how many people try to resist it. Most things work until they don’t, which is why it can be difficult to let go of what worked before to what will work now.

Change is an invitation to move on to the next thing, the next phase, the next idea. When we fight against it we don’t stop the change but instead stop ourselves. We get stuck. Instead of allowing the change to move us by our own choosing we are eventually forced into a less favorable choice that may not even come from us but from the outside. Being stuck isn’t necessarily negative, but instead a life notification that something needs to shift.

Let me give you some examples:

  1. Your child is now a teenager (or young adult) but you are struggling with them getting older and continue to interact with them as if they were a child. You end up arguing more than you would because they are trying to engage in the world according to the stage of life they are in while you are trying to keep them from naturally progressing.

  1. You have been at the same job for 5 years and have loved your time there. Recently, however, you got a new boss and they are making your job more difficult than it needs to be. You have tried talking to them about it but they are not taking any steps to remedy the situation. You don’t want to leave your job but become overwhelmed going into work every day because of the environment.

  1. You have been married for a decade (or more). You feel that you have grown apart from your partner. When you try to talk to them about it, they refuse and are unwilling to go to counseling. You were taught that divorce is not an option so you walk on eggshells to keep the peace.

These are just a few of the scenarios that we as humans may encounter - either in our own lives or in the lives of others. Over the next handful of weeks I am going to be outlining the areas of life that we tend to get stuck in so that you can identify whether you are in that place and what the next steps are for you to move forward.

If you already know you are stuck and are unsure of how to move forward to make a positive difference in your daily life, I would love to help you figure it out! Schedule your free consult with me today: https://calendly.com/katiepat48-1/30min.
